To get a legal answer you should speak with an employment lawyer but based on what you have indicated I think they are within their rights to handle the situation as they have. You gave notice and never rescinded it, only agreed to multiple temporary extensions. If you planned to stay you should have ask to be reinstated as a permanent employee. Good Luck
