Is it safe to use a regular sized tampon?

You should be fine. Gentle Glide regulars are actually one of, if not the, smallest tampons. Since your period is moderate I'd start with 4 hours and go up to 6. Can you put one in well before the party to get use to it and to see if 4 hours is too short or just enough time?
